Songs of Survival
ongoing
A biannual curation of a concert series for survivors of sexual assault and abuse, held in Chicago.
Awakenings seeks Musicians for an evening of performance.
The mission of the Awakenings is to MAKE VISIBLE the artistic expression of survivors of sexual violence.
Awakenings is home to a multi-media art gallery featuring the artistic expressions of rape and sexual abuse survivors. By showcasing stories of survival, we are helping survivors find peace while simultaneously challenging the cultural taboos that prevent an honest discussion of sexual violence.
We shine a light on the truth. We don’t mince words. We are upfront and dead center about the prevalence of rape and sexual abuse in our culture. We are not here to make you comfortable. We are here to tell the truth and share the stories of the survivors brave enough to tell them.
Songs of Survival is a concert series featuring originally composed or re-envisioned music and poetry and dance by, for, and about survivors. So far we have hosted three Songs of Survival concerts, and each one has been emotional, impactful, and inspiring.
What we are looking for and what to expect:
We are looking for performers of music - whatever this means to you - to perform one to a few pieces at Songs of Survival evening concert on October 18, 2018.
Dancers and spoken word performers are welcome to apply.
We can offer a small stipend.
There will be a rehearsal/sound check on the day of the performance. A PA system will be provided. Performers are also welcome to bring their own equipment or instruments.
We are looking for survivors of sexual violence and friends, family, and loved ones of survivors.
We are asking for performers to be 18 years or older.
Please address submissions to Curator and Producer Cassandra. Please fill out the application form and send resume and/or link to samples of your work. If you do not have samples of your work, you may still apply.
After the submission deadline on August 15, Cassandra will review and ask for a phone call or video submission for the last week in August.
